In the 1970s, a secret accident at a Soviet research lab turned young scientist Dr Rakhil Oktyabrinovna Kosomov into a living particle accelerator! Now in her 60s, she has moved to Paragon City to work at the university and hopefully have a chance to collaborate with Positron. While she waits for Dr Keyes to quit hanging out under statues, she's decided to spend her free time trying to help the people of Paragon and hone the less industrial applications of her abilities.

Appearance

Raye is a short human woman with short-cropped green hair and purple skin. It is not known if she can suppress the intense (but harmless) green glow from her eyes and hands. Notably, she has not aged apparently since her accident: despite being over 60 years old, she still has the appearance of a twenty-something.

Personality

Rakhil may be dedicated to her research, but she has always known the value of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In her spare time, she's known to hang out in Pocket D or other clubs, or see the sights in her new home.

History

Born the day of the Sputnik launch in 1957, Raye had an interest in science and technology from a very early age and as a child idolized Valentina Tereshkova. As a student, she developed a reputation for putting her studies ahead of her social life, and was often regarded as a loner, and showed no interest in dating. Taking especially to her science classes, and hoping to boost her chances of eventually being accepted to the cosmonaut corps, she enrolled at Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.

After graduating from MEPhI, she found herself recruited to work with the U-70 synchrotron. After a still-classified accident in the 1970s[1], she found herself turned into a living particle accelerator. From then until approximately 1983, she was confined to a protective suit until she learned to control her powers and on those grounds her applications to the space agency were denied on the grounds that the leaden suit would add too much mass to the payload[2]. Feeling that her work in the lab would be of more value, she turned down an invitation to join the Soviet Defenders of the Motherland, citing their nearly starting a nuclear war in 1976 as a key factor in her decision. Dr Dmitri Krylov later attempted once again to recruit her to his program to develop metahuman supersoldiers, and managed to anger her to the point where it is rumoured that he still has "НЕТ"[3] burned into his chest. After this, no further attempts were made to recruit her for combat operations, and rumours began to spread that she was "unsuited" to hero work or other sensitive positions[4].

With the breakup of the USSR, by the early 1990s she found herself suddenly unemployed due to budget cuts. After a series of jobs at various laboratories and universities around the world, she made the choice to move to Paragon City in 2021 to take a job at Paragon University's Steel Canyon campus, in the hopes of having an opportunity to work with the famed Dr Raymond Keyes who is based nearby. While waiting for that chance, she's decided to try to attract his attention (or at least get him to respond to an email) by signing on to become a costumed crimefighter, finding the opportunity to do so on her own terms to be more to her liking.

Known Powers and Abilities

  • Particle Projection
    • Since the accident, Raye's body can produce and propel a variety of particles including neutrinos, photons, electrons, protons, and neutrons, with no apparent external source for the material or energy. Her hypothesis, which has yet to be experimentally confirmed, is that her body now contains a nanoscopic wormhole from which it can draw forth material from elsewhere in the multiverse. One side effect is that her metabolism no longer seems to require input and is effectively self-sustaining.
  • Quantum Teleportation
    • Raye has the ability to translocate herself. She's not entirely sure how this works, as it fails if she thinks too hard about it, so she just mutters "Квантовая чушь"[5] and hopes for the best.
  • Flight
    • The Synchrotronic Backpack[6]'s cooling fan exhaust can be used to manoeuvre while she uses electrostatic charge to levitate. Full-speed flight should be possible by using particle beams for propulsion, but this is not suitable for use in areas that are or are intended to someday be populated. The Kzinti Lesson is best left to the Department of Literature, as far as she's concerned.

  • Oktyabrin Kosomov - Father †
  • Revmira - Mother †
  • Three sisters (two living)
  • Seven nieces (six living)
  • Four grand-nieces, one grand-nephew

Friends and Allies

Acquaintances

Enemies

Miscellany

  • Favourite movie is "Ghostbusters", but she tends to rewatch the 2016 reboot more often
    • Was once banned from saying "back off, man, I'm a scientist" in a lab due to overuse
  • Fond of synthwave, although she never bothers to note the names of tracks or artists and just listens to whatever's on

Roleplay Hooks

  • University Professor - Are you a teacher, student, or otherwise active at Paragon City University?
  • Clubber - Have you seen her out at Pocket D, Femme Fatales, Penny Palace, or some other club?
  • Soviet Scientist - Did you have connections with physics research in the former USSR? Were you affiliated with a Soviet super-team or program in the 1970s or 1980s?

Footnotes

  1. Even her closest friends have never learned the details, because while she no longer needs to fear security agencies, her family still does.
  2. That she could herself be a power source for a spacecraft was not considered relevant, as it would pose an unacceptable risk to ground facilities and crew.
  3. 3.0 3.1 "No"
  4. Because of this quiet blacklisting, she was not contacted to assist with the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986, despite her immunity to radiation being an obvious asset in the recovery efforts.
  5. "Quantum rubbish"
  6. Which she insists is not a "proton pack"
