Micon "Cobalt Cowl" James (born July 19th, 1992) is an American mixed martial artist and local hero. He holds a master's degree in architecture from Paragon University. He is a black belt in Brazillian jiu jitsu and Krav Maga, as well as being a noted pankratiast and user of the Russian Systema. Micon has won a number of martial arts championships and is known to train civilians of Paragon City at little to no charge. In his time as a hero, he has been described as a humanitarian, compassionate, and community driven.

Early Life

James was born in Paragon City, Rhode Island, on July 19th, 1992, to Mother and Father James, who was a Desert Storm soldier, a mechanic, and martial artist. James was the youngest of three brothers. When James was twelve, his father passed away due to gang violence involving the Hellions.

James has described his childhood as rough and tumble. He was athletic, scholastically above average, and shy. His father, Father, was known to teach self-defense to women and the elderly and often came into scuffles with the various gangs that were still growing in popularity at the time. Father was found dead in an arson-related incident tied to a conflict between Hellions and Skulls. James has attributed his father's love of comics and death as his central inspirations for getting into the business as a registered hero.

Career

2010 to 2014: Hero in a Hoodie

While attending Paragon Univeristy at the XXX campus in 2010, James began his training in a variety of martial arts, an interest that led to black belts and awards. He started to participate in martial arts competitions. He was defeated in his first two tournaments, three championships, and a number of small, unorganized fights before he improved enough in 2011 that he scored a victory over minorly powered competitor Hank "Hammerfist" Hall.

In 2012, starting with an open tourney in King's Row, Micon James took to wearing a blue, Adidas hoodie and jogging pants as a costume for his fights and was thus given the moniker 'The Cobalt Cowl' by Norm Reynolds, an announcer known to be creative with his callouts. Using his new name, James signed himself up in E.L.I.T.E. to be legally allowed to use his talents and training to combat Hellions and put a stop to gang violence in his neighborhood near Prometheus Park.

In late 2013, James suffered his twelfth and final loss of his career, losing an upset decision to Dante Delfuego. On October 16th, 2013, he avenged his defeat to Delfuego and by doing so won the Professional Heavy-Weight Mixed Martial Art champion title. He defended the title through seven consecutive tournaments until he graduated from Paragon University, retiring from the league.

2015 to 2021: Local Legend

In 2015, James decided against working with his degree in favor of continuing to protect his hometown in what he described as a "much-needed foundation of stability." James claimed that the many instances of protection only being available through heroes in training or "rent-a-capes," that the community did not have "a unified source of light and inspiration."

In 2016, James terminated his relationship with E.L.I.T.E. after the organization allegedly demanded that he move his efforts to Steel Canyon. While this caused a temporary pause in his identity as the Cobalt Cowl lasting for three months, James continued to act as a hero for the people around his home in more mundane capacities. He was a political advocate, pushing for equality, representation, and labor laws. Registered, though never running for office, James served as a voice for his community and led to an increased police presence to deal with the Hellion activity.

In 2019, after three years, the reorganization of funds for the local police department and a new representative caused James' neighborhood to become victim to a rise in gang violence once more. After speaking out about it for so long, and acting as an occasional muscle to protect people in the park, James re-registered through the city as an independent hero. While he decides against taking corporate sponsorships or federal funding, he has been known to affiliate with Luigi's Italian Ristorante and a franchised Pop Now! convenience store.

In early 2020, photographs of James began to appear frequently in the local newspapers, often bruised, burned, beaten, or bloodied after encounters with violent gang activity, eclipsing the occasional appearance in supporting schools or elderly or in rallies. James has responded to the overwhelming coverage of himself in disarray, stating that he feels it is "disingenuous and unfairly targeted" in an attempt to show him as weaker than he is. To encourage more criminals to fight against him rather than peacefully giving up their weapons and themselves into his custody. No Hellions have responded to this accusation in a comprehendible manner.

In 2021, James fully engaged himself as a hero. He rarely is seen outside of his costume and has increased his activity in humanitarian efforts across Atlas Park with occasional visits into surrounding areas of Paragon City, cementing himself as a local legend.

Martial Arts

James has received a 3rd degree black belt in Brazillian jiu-jitsu and a 3rd Dan in Krav Maga. He has studied from those who took part in Jim Arvantis' efforts to introduce Neo-pankration to the Olympics. He has also studied from Raymond Horwitz's in-depth analysis and practice of the Russian martial art Systema.

In 2011, he won the Unpowered Wrestling Championship at the Paragon University Wrestling League, and won it again the following year.

In 2013, he first won the Professional Heavy-Weight Mixed Martial Art champion title at the S.Kensington Memorial League, which he held for three consecutive years.

In 2018, he won the Perfect Practice award for by Theagenes magazine.

In 2019, he won the Sparring Grand Champions at the B.A.Buster's All American Championship.
