A down-on-their-luck mutant from Sharkhead who signed on to become a test subject for some quick cash, Carla Girard found their powers—special venom that was mildly toxic injected by specialized keratinous growths on her skin—amplified a thousand-fold. Taking a name from their favourite flower, Odontonema cuspidatum, also known as the firespike, they set out to make a name for themself, and maybe get a little revenge while they're at it.
Appearance
Tall, solidly built, with short (dyed) red hair and usually smirking. Their standard costume is a reddish bodysuit with a vine motif stencilled on, a tactical belt, and an X pattern painted on their face.
Personality
Prickly would be a bit of an understatement. Carla has a quick temper, but is capable of caring about people—they've just learned over the years that it's often best not to.
History
Born and raised to miners from Sharkhead Isle, Carla dropped out of school (or what passes for school in Étoile) at age 12 to look after her brother after both of their parents were killed in the same spoil heap collapse. At age 20, while visiting Cap au Diable to take a high school equivalency exam, they saw an ad looking for "unique individuals" to participate in research trials for cash. Expecting a bit of easy money proved to be a mistake—Dr Peitenimi[2]'s experiments started off fairly simple, with tissue samples and blood tests. Soon it involved trying tailored concoctions and being bombarded with a variety of gases, rays, and other scientific sounding things. When painful side effects started happening, they tried to quit, only to be told that something "tragic" would happen to their only living relative if there was a lack of cooperation. After several years of increasingly painful tests—more invasive examinations, more gruelling tests of physical limits, increasingly draining physiological changes, the tests were declared a failure and the experiment scrapped. Carla was thrown out without a paycheque, or any guarantee of their family's safety, to show for it. Bitterly, they attempted to file a complaint against the researchers, only to discover that the lab was gone, and officially never existed. Carla, having relied on scams and petty theft to get by in their younger days, moved up with her enhanced abilities to pulling off robberies to pay for their sister's increasingly frequent and expensive medical treatments, until they were eventually arrested by Longbow while attempting to rob the Galaxy City bank. Breaking free on their way to a court date the day of the Shivan attack, they returned to Sharkhead to find that their sister was nowhere to be found.
Powers and Abilities
Carla Girard was born with a relatively minor mutation that caused their skin to produce thousands of microscopic keratin-based needles that secrete a mild irritant under stress. Dr Peitenimi[2]'s experiments drastically increased the size and speed of the needles's growth, while also amplifying the potency of the "venom" to make it both highly toxic and flammable. Additional mutations to enhance strength, speed, and durability were also added, which they haven't complained about.
