Background

Bertrand "Brett" Golding was Gaston Golding and Fabienne Golding on September 19th, 1996, on Mercy Island within the Rogue Isles. He is the fourth of five siblings; preceeded by his older brothers Gabriel, Matthew, and Olivier, and followed by his younger sister Jasmine. The Golding family had lived in the Rogue Isles for generations, with ancestral roots tracing back to both French pirates and escaped slaves. Like most "regular civilians" living in the Isles, they were very poor with little hope for upward mobility under the oppressive regime of Lord Recluse.

Like all young people of the Isles, each of the Golding children served a period of compulsory military service. Unlike his siblings, Brett opted to stay on past his government-mandated service, as he saw advancement through the ranks of Arachnos as the only way to advance in society. Golding served five years in the Wolf Spider Corps, working his way up to the rank of Huntsman. During this period of service, he served exclusively in domestic operations, primarily those against Longbow.

On November 5th, 2021, Huntsman Golding was assigned to the ongoing Arachnos operation in Faultline. On December 18th, 2021, the first day of his ground deployment in Faultline, Golding abandoned his unit and headed straight to the Longbow outpost in the area, where he surrendered himself into custody and made a request for political asylum.

While in custody, Golding gave a full and detailed account of every Arachnos operation he took part in, as well as all supplementary information he was aware of; troop movements and deployments, other operations in progress, access and radio codes, and so on.

Current Activities

Golding is currently going through the bureaucratic process of asylum-seeking, and is on a state-backed plan of cash and housing assistance. During this period of transition, he has been acting as a kind of "neighborhood watch", responding to local crime and threats however he can, primarily in and around Skyway City. He has maintained cordial relations with the Skyway City precinct of the Paragon Police Department and keeps them updated on his activities.

Affiliations

Golding is subordinate to the United States government and to Longbow. As a part of the terms of his asylum application, he has agreed both to comply with any request or assignment given by either party (to date, this has only included acting as an 'expert consultant' on matters pertaining to Arachnos), and to have a tracking chip implanted in his arm to allow his whereabouts to be monitored by the authorities. Many in Longbow are dubious of his "side switch". Golding also regularly checks in with his Longbow handler, Agent Inca.

Golding is also licensed by the FBSA to act as a costumed hero, which is where Golding has been spending the majority of his time. He is currently on a "refugee assistance" program that provides him with housing, living benefits, and a monthly stipend to cover him during his "resettlement period". He currently has no other form of employment.

Enemies

Golding is wanted by Arachnos for his act of abandonment and betrayal. A $30,000 bounty has been placed on his head (raised from the initial $10,000 bounty).

Thoughts From Agent Inca

As a part of being granted political asylum, Golding was assigned a Longbow handler to keep track of him. This man, Agent Robert Inca, receives regular reports of Golding's whereabouts and activities both from Golding himself and via Golding's implanted tracking chip. Below are thoughts and notes taken from Agent Inca's files regarding Golding.

  • "Golding is a markedly worse shot with anything other than his Arachnos-issued firearms. He claims that this is intentional on the part of the Recluse regime; not only do they use different ammo and caliber for their guns than the rest of the world, but their guns are intentionally weighted differently to make it more difficult for those not trained by Arachnos to simply pick up and use them. Consequently, this makes Arachnos agents who have not specifically trained with standard issue firearms only able to fully leverage their skills when using Arachnos weapons."

OOC Section

  • All of the above information is information any investigating character could get a hold of; this page isn't written as being a single document from a single source, but all of the personal information and background details could be discovered by searching a handful of major databases (IE collating data from both Longbow and the FBSA).
  • Despite the bounty, Golding is a relatively low priority for Arachnos; as a lower-ranked Huntsman, he wasn't able to give Longbow much information they didn't already possess, and as of right now his knowledge of Arachnos tactics isn't fully being utilized to hurt Arachnos (as Golding still isn't that trusted, and Longbow is reticent to potentially risk the lives of its agents based on Golding's knowledge or assessment). The bounty is more for show than anything, as letting a traitor (even a minor one) go completely would be perceived as a blow to Arachnos' reputation. However, if Golding becomes more prominent, more trusted by Longbow, and/or his knowledge better used to directly hurt Arachnos operations, he'd quickly become a higher priority, warranting a much higher bounty or even the deployment of direct hit squads.
  • The tracking chip in Golding's arm could easily be used to find him by any heroes (or hacker villains) who have access to secured Longbow databases.
